If you’ve followed these rankings in previous years or read our statistician profiles, this probably doesn’t surprise you. In the U.S. News & World Report statisticians profile, executive director of Merck Research Laboratories biostatistics department, Devan Mehrotra, says:

“I absolutely fell in love with statistics. Any real-world problem almost always is going to require some data to be analyzed and interpreted, generating value-added solutions by using statistics.”

Opportunities for statisticians are expected to grow most rapidly in the coming years in fields ranging from biomedicine, environmental science, social science, human rights work and counterterrorism.
