Fall Data Challenge 2021: Congratulations to the Winners!

In this year’s Fall Data Challenge, Fight Food Insecurity, 76 teams and 139 students submitted their data visualizations and analyses of the current state of food security across the United States.

Students recommended a range of creative potential solutions to help provide relief for food scarcity and insecurity. Their statistical analyses of the dataset allowed them to identify relationships between food insecurity and neighborhood income, population, poverty rate, and other characteristics. These analyses led teams to suggest solutions such as developing transportation services to better accommodate low-income households without access to vehicles or grocery stores, state-funded grocery delivery services, and more.

For the contest, teams of up to five students submitted entries that included a short essay describing the team’s process and a slide presentation of its analysis and recommendations. A panel of judges — American Statistical Association members with expertise in census data, food security, and education — awarded prizes to the top high school and undergraduate teams for overall analysis, plus honorable mentions for best data visualization and use of external data.

Congratulations to our winning teams!
