Breaking News: #DataViz Headline Challenge

Write a headline for a New York Times graph!

Have you seen your share of attention-grabbing news headlines? Now is the time to put on your data journalism hat and create some yourself! 

The New York Times Learning Network’s “What’s Going on in This Graph?” and the American Statistical Association are teaming up for the This is Statistics 2022 Spring Contest. Showcase your statistical literacy and journalism skills by submitting your clear and compelling headlines for New York Times graphs in March’s four weekly challenges.

This contest will run weekly from March 4 – 30. Finalists will be published on the This is Statistics website each week and top winners will get prizes.

Challenge Updates

The #DataViz Headline Challenge is now closed! Thanks for playing.

The deadline for students to submit a Week Four headline was Wednesday, March 30 at 6 pm ET/3 pm PT. One response per student.

The best headlines from Week Four will be announced as finalists on Monday, April 4. Winners will be determined following the announcement of Week Four finalists.

Teachers, click here to briefly tell us how you use the New York Times Learning Network’s “What’s Going On In This Graph?” or the 2022 #DataViz Headline Challenge in your classroom. Your response may be featured online and you will be entered into a random drawing for a gift card. The last day for submittions is Thursday, March 31. 


About the 2022 #DataViz Headline Challenge

There are four weekly challenges in the #DataViz Headline Challenge. Each week’s graph will be released simultaneously here on the #DataViz Headline Challenge webpage, on the challenge email list, and in the New York Times Learning Network’s “What’s Going On In This Graph?” webpage.

Rules 

Student Headlines
  • Each week’s graph will be released simultaneously here on the #DataViz Headline Challenge webpage, on the challenge email list, and in the New York Times Learning Network’s “What’s Going On In This Graph?” webpage
  • The deadlines for submitting each weekly challenge headline is the following Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT (see above schedule). Only one response per student is allowed. All headlines must be submitted using the form on the This is Statistics #DataViz Headline Challenge webpage.
  • On the following Monday, the best headlines from the previous week for the middle/high school and undergraduate categories will be recognized as finalists and published on the This is Statistics blog. Grand winners for the 2022 Spring Challenge will be announced in April.
  • Submitted headlines will be evaluated for: 
    • Shows understanding of the data, statistics and graph
    • Relates directly to the main idea of the graph
    • Is creative and focused; grabs attention so the viewer wants to read the accompanying article.

Teacher Best Practices
  • Teachers can participate, too!  Briefly, tell us how you use “What’s Going On In This Graph?” or the #DataViz Headline Challenge in your classroom. Submit your best practices and suggestions on the form by Wednesday, March 30. Your response may be featured online, and you will be entered into a random drawing for a gift card and swag. 
Prizes and Perks

All winning submissions from the middle/high school and undergraduate student categories will have their headlines published with their byline on the This is Statistics blog. Winners will also receive a $50 Amazon gift card, complimentary ASA membership and a This is Statistics winners t-shirt.
